Get an insight into Greece’s amazing gastronomy by having an “earth-to-table” experience of the entire local food production chain. You will start with a modern local food workshop to see how the delicacies are being manufactured, next you will visit a traditional Greek farmer’s house to experience the cultivation of herbs, spices, vegetables and fruits firsthand, and finally end your tour at the local delicatessen shop to see the end result of the ready-made products.
You will start your tour with a visit to a modern local food factory, where jams, pasta, sweets and other local products from Syros are made.
Then, you will head to the farm which is located on the north side of the island, above Lia bay and enjoys spectacular views of the Aegean Sea. Inside the farm you will see the small traditional farmhouse, two charming chapels, a large number of wild plants and herbs, large variety of fruits and trees, grapevines and wild animal life and especially birds that are in abundance. Depending on the season you can help the farmer to collect olives, grapes or other seasonal products and learn the secrets of a traditional vegetable garden passed from generation to generation as well as the production of wine. Among such are potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, ocras, cucumbers, melons, watermelons, onions, garlic, broad beans, green beans, vanillas, damson, apples, pomegranates, figs, grapes, pears, mandarins, nectarines, oranges, lemons, apricots, peaches, quince, cherries, plums, almonds and olives (oil). All vegetables seen on the farm are of the highest quality and purity, grown only for domestic use.
You will then be seated in the traditional outdoor dining area where a local chef will use the wood-fire oven to prepare you a traditional meal, so you can sit down to a family style dinner with handpicked ingredients from the farm. Among these you will try local specialty “fourtalia”, seasonal salad, handmade pasta with tomato sauce, traditional sweet and homemade wine.
You will complete the tour at a local delicatessen shop where you will find the end results of the manufacturing of all traditional products, including spoon sweets, wine, pasta, caper and olive oils and you will be greeted with a “farewell” treat.
This tour is semi private for small groups of 4 – 16 persons (maximum).
Children (3 – 12 years old) and infants are welcome to participate with parental guidance.
