Everybody’s heard of Naxos amazing sandy beach coastline, but once you are done exploring kilometers-long white beach paradise, this alternative tour may be your best opportunity to experience an authentic side of Naxos island and its mountainous landscapes that reveal a lot about its local character and the island’s overwhelming history.
An experienced, native Naxian guide who has spend his entire life on the island will escort you to experience – a true – away from the tourist line – side of Naxos. Driving along the coastline, you will pass by the beaches of Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, Plaka and Mikri Vigla to continue inland. You will stop at the Temple of Goddess Demetra at Sangri village to admire an ancient but reconstructed temple from 530 BC, as well as its museum. Next, you will pass by through a picturesque, colorful and unique village of Chalki, where it is an absolute must to visit the old distillery which produces the famous Naxian liqueur “Kitron” since 1896.
Later, you will visit an ancient orthodox church from the 4th century BC, Panagia Drosiani (full of rich frescoes) followed by a coffee break at a lovely cafe at 550 m. altitude, enjoying a panoramic view of the island’s southwest side. As you stop at several traditional villages of Naxos (Apeiranthos, Koronos, Apollon and Eggares) you will discover some of the island’s finest traditional shops and rich gastronomy. A traditional homemade lunch that will be served containing several of the typical Naxian delicacies will become an experience to remember (among many, tasting the famous Naxos’ cheeses is not to be missed).
You will pass through the greenest part of the island, to reach the small fishing village on the northeast, Apollon, and also visit the famous ‘Kouros’ marble statue (dating 6th-7th century BC). Finally, the tour ends at the visit to an old olive oil factory, where you will learn how the “liquid gold” was once produced at the village of Eggares, before you return back to the city and your hotel.
This tour is private for small groups of 1 – 4 persons and is conducted by private car or minivan, with an English speaking escort. For larger groups (up to 8 persons) prices are available on request.
